Hot Pickled Carrots

I have a favorite burrito joint. It’s nothing special but it’s mine; busy, consistent, and open until 10pm. About 90% of the time I order the same thing– a “veggie burrito supreme”, which consists of potatoes, rice, black beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guacamole. You can get it in a whole wheat tortilla if you want, but really what’s the point? It’s supreme. 

The best part about that burrito, though? The hot carrots at the salsa bar. You are inevitably going to wait 10-20 minutes for your order unless it’s mid-afternoon on a Tuesday, and in all likelihood you’ve arrived absolutely ravenous  and quite honestly might pass out if you had to actually wait those excruciating 10-20 minutes to eat. Eat This: Underbelly, San Diego

UNDERBELLY, SAN DIEGO, CA

Who: From the guys behind Craft and Commerce and Neighborhood.

What:  New ramen joint featuring farm fresh produce, small bites, big bowls and a local-heavy tap list.

Where: Corner of Kettner and Fir in Little Italy, San Diego.

When: Go late afternoon to beat the crowd. Order at the bar, take your beer and grab a seat facing the street if you can find one.

Why: The views of downtown and a peek at the ocean are worth the foreseeable struggle finding a seat in this small, open air spot replacing the old Red Velvet Wine Bar.

EAT THIS: Shrimp Gyozas, Seven Radish Salad, Charred Spicy Kimchee Ramen, Vegetable Ramen; don’t hesitate to personalize with any number of ramen add-ons from bacon-wrapped mushrooms, to soft-boiled egg, to sake braised oxtail. Slurp away.
